My education abroad experience

This photo gallery provides a glimpse into my marine biology experience in Australia. At James Cook University, I took competitive marine science courses that were unavailable at my home university. I was able to see my coursework firsthand at surrounding islands and the Great Barrier Reef. This study abroad experience was crucial for the development of skills and knowledge in my career.

I highly recommend studying abroad to every student, regardless of your discipline. If you think you could never fund such an experience, you are not alone. I thought the same thing until I found the Gilman Scholarship. To find out how I was able to finance my studies, click the button below!

Student submitted questions

For people like me who really want to study abroad but feel they don't have the means, what would you recommend? How is study abroad made affordable?

I was in the same boat. For years I wanted to study abroad, but did not pursue a program due to financial reasons. I could not let the dream go, and so I did extensive scholarship research.

I would recommend looking at all of your options and speaking with an Education Abroad advisor regularly. It is not a quick process, but if you do the work it will more than pay off. The Gilman Scholarship was indispensable for my study abroad experience, but I also applied for other scholarships as well.

Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for! Talk to advisors at your school - they have a multitude of resources and want to help you!

For someone who wants to go to graduate school to study corals, what advice would you give?

I speak from my personal experience, and everyone has a unique journey. However, my advice to someone wishing to pursue a graduate degree in coral science would be:

1. Read about it, talk about it. Are you 100% interested in this specific topic?

2. Get field experience. Make sure this is what you want to spend your life doing.

3. Do your research. Find and contact graduate programs or professors in your area of interest.

4. Narrow it down, apply. Decide on several schools and make yourself the most qualified candidate.
